Nestled in the heart of the Hudson Valley in Middletown, NY, Maplewood Warmbloods is a premier equestrian facility that blends world-class breeding and training with the serene beauty of 115 acres of picturesque, manicured pasture. For those of us fortunate enough to live nearby, it’s a true gem—offering access to top-tier dressage horses just minutes from home.

Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with owner Jen Vanover to learn a bit about her operation.  Jen’s path to running Maplewood Warmbloods is a testament to her passion for both horses and excellence. Originally from Michigan, Jen’s journey began as a competitive dressage rider where she earned her Bronze and Silver rider awards through Prix St. George. After working as a mechanical engineer for many years, Jen’s love for breeding and her desire to produce quality horses took center stage, leading her to make the transition into full-time equestrian business ownership with Maplewood Warmbloods.

Maplewood Warmbloods is currently a private facility with a full-time focus on breeding, training, and selling exceptional German Oldenburg Verband (GOV) horses, known for their “good rideability, willingness, and versatility”. With a commitment to producing horses of the highest caliber, the farm maintains a herd of around 50 carefully selected horses. These horses undergo rigorous training from their earliest years, preparing them for competitive dressage and beyond. The farm also plays an integral role in the local equestrian scene by hosting world-class symposiums and clinics and two prestigious USDF/USEF-recognized breed and dressage competitions.

Head trainer, Charell Garcia, a seasoned rider and trainer from the Netherlands, joined Maplewood Warmbloods in February 2024. With a wealth of experience in starting young horses and advancing them to top-level competition, Charell is the driving force behind the farm’s training program riding and starting all the horses. Watching her ride MW Mastermind, a promising 5-year-old, was a great treat and testament to her skill and the farm’s commitment to developing future champions.

The combined accomplishments of both of these women is truely impressive when learning that they also don’t employ any outside help. All upkeep of the farm and overview and implementation of the breeding program is done by them and Jen’s partner, Tommy Pushkal…wow.
